Yuri Berchiche “We Are Going With Berizzo’s Ideas To The Death”
Despite making several big signings over the summer Athletic have not had a good start to the season. The Lions currently find themselves in the shadow of the relegation zone and in big need of turning things around quickly. On Wednesday Yuri Berchiche addressed the media following training and stated that he is not happy seeing Athletic so far down the La Liga table.
“It is difficult to see this team so far down the table when the goal is just the opposite. We have also had some bad luck. We’ve played one game less and the table is very tight, but we have to fix some details. We are worried about being so far down because Athletic has to fight to be further up the table. I also think we have conceded more goals because of our desire to turn games around. We’ve taken risks but we can’t go crazy. We have to have patience to reverse situations after we have conceded a goal.”
Despite the disappointing results, Berchiche says that Athletic are playing a very good style of football and has called on fans to be patient with the team. The left-back doesn’t believe that the intense demand has made the players tired in the second half of games and says that Berizzo is working with the squad on fixing details that have hurt Athletic in matches this season.
“We are going with Berizzo’s ideas to the death, we just have to adjust some issues. We are watching videos to know where we can improve. To get more points we have to score more goals. The problem that we are having is that when we take the initiative and have possession it is difficult to create chances. We can have the ball in the final third but from there we haven’t been good enough. We play a demanding style in which you have to press the entire time and then attack. In the game against Real Madrid everyone was amazed at how good we were physically. We have to give the project time. We should give ourselves the opportunity to see that we are on the right track and there is no doubt about the work that we do during the week.”
In closing, Berchiche admitted that the 3-1 loss to Real Sociedad last weekend was one of the worst defeats of his career because he felt very responsible. The 28-year-old has had to learn a new style of football but also believes that he is improving every day. At the end of the day, he says you have to learn from situations like these.
“I don’t think it was an aggressive Derby, but the referee was quick to show cards. I am very demanding of myself and it hasn’t been easy for me. The Derby was one of the worst defeats of my life because I felt very responsible. I lost the ball which hurt us and kept us from winning the game. You always have to learn from these moments. Although I had to adapt to the team’s game which is different than what I was used to doing, I am happy and believe that I am getting better every day.”
Yuri Berchiche was also called up to the Basque National Team on Wednesday for the game against Venezuela which will take place on Friday against Venezuela at Mendizorrotza. Aritz Aduriz, Dani García, Iñigo Martinez, and Iñaki Williams will also represent Athletic Club for the Euskal Selekzioa. When the international break comes to an end the Lions will be back in action on 21 October when they will travel to Ipurua to face off with Eibar in another key Basque Derby.
