Hodei Oleaga Reportedly Agrees To Contract Renewal With Athletic Club
Athletic have asked a lot of Hodei Oleaga over the past few months. The 21-year-old went into the summer expecting to be the starting goalkeeper for Bilbao Athletic, but was quickly called up to the first team where he functioned as the backup to Unai Simón. After Iago Herrerín returned from injury Oleaga went back to Bilbao Athletic but it is clear that the club have been impressed with the Lezama product.
Athletic view Oleaga as another player in the long line of talented goalkeepers to come through Lezama and believe that he could earn a regular place at the San Mamés in the future. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season it became necessary for the club to negotiate a renewal and Oleaga made it clear that he wanted to stay with Athletic despite having other options.
According to a breaking report from Javier Beltran of AS, Oleaga and Athletic have already reached an agreement on an extension which could be announced as early as next week. Along with renewing his deal, the 21-year-old will also see his wages and release clause raised as well. He will continue as the starting goalkeeper for Bilbao Athletic this season and the goal will be to send him on loan to a club in the second division next year.
Oleaga has always been a player committed to working hard and having a great attitude. His reflexes and positioning stand out as his biggest qualities, while his height has also given him an advantage in goal. Other clubs in La Liga had already reached out to the Lezama product in hopes of signing him when his contract expires, but Oleaga has had his mind made up that he wanted to continue his career with Athletic Club.
