Anderlecht Reportedly Join The Race To Sign Athletic Club Goalkeeper Alex Remiro
The situation between Alex Remiro and Athletic is well known by this point. According to the club President, Josu Urrutia, the goalkeeper has refused to negotiate a new contract and wants to leave. With Unai Simón having stepped up in a huge way, not to mention the return of a healthy Iago Herrerín, it looks as though Remiro is living on borrowed time and other clubs are monitoring the situation closely.
Up to this point it has been common knowledge that both Real Sociedad and Villarreal have shown interest in the 23-year-old. The two La Liga sides are in need of strengthening their goalkeeper position and have identified Remiro as a perfect candidate. That being said, they aren’t the only clubs that have reached out to the Lezama product.
According to a new report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, Anderlecht are hoping to sign Remiro for next season. The Belgian giants are currently competing in the Europa League and would be willing to offer the goalkeeper the opportunity to compete for the starting role at the club if he were to make the switch next summer. With his contract set to expire after the current season Remiro will be free to negotiate with other clubs starting in January.
Only time will tell how this situation will play out. The report does mention that Remiro would prefer to play in Spain or England, but there is no doubt that he will likely have several offers to choose from if he does leave Athletic for free. President Josu Urrutia made it clear that the Lions have not entertained the idea of selling Remiro in the winter transfer window and that the player has not asked for that either. Unless something changes moving forward, the 23-year-old is simply waiting for his current contract to expire.
