Markel Susaeta “We Came Into The Game With Confidence, But Everything Went The Other Way”
Markel Susaeta was not happy after Athletic Club’s 3-1 loss to Real Sociedad on Friday. After the game he spoke with Athletic TV and said that the team made mistakes which ended up costing them dearly. The Lions went into the game with complete confidence, but things turned around quickly and they weren’t able to respond properly.
“We came from a good game against Barcelona with a desire to win. The start of the game was good, but the small details and our mistakes decided the game. With one chance they were able to score three goals. We played a better game than Real Sociedad, but it’s difficult to win when you give away two penalties. We were killed by our mistakes. It’s hard to explain what happened. We came into the game with confidence, but everything went the other way.”
Susaeta said that the team did well to respond to the first goal, but after the second they couldn’t break through Real Sociedad’s defense. The Lions knew that if they made mistakes the game could turn out like this and now they have to take the international break to work on fixing these costly errors.
“We quickly turned around the situation after the first goal, but their second goal hurt us. They played defensively and we couldn’t create chances. We knew that the game was going to be like this. They were going to wait for us to make mistakes and that’s what we did. These are hard times but the season has only begun. We have to reflect during these two weeks of rest. Each player has to think about what he can do to contribute and improve.”
Susaeta and his teammates will now have the next two weeks to work on improving and preparing for their next game. Athletic will be back in action on 21 October as they travel to Ipurua to take on Eibar in what will be their second straight Basque Derby. If the Lions are serious about qualifying for Europe this season they will have to start stringing together wins if they are to climb the La Liga table.
