Hodei Oleaga Returns To Bilbao Athletic
It has been a long few months for Hodei Oleaga considering the fact that he hasn’t even played a single minute so far this season. The goalkeeper went into the summer expected to be the starter for Bilbao Athletic, but was eventually called up to train with the first team. With Iago Herrerín injured and Alex Remiro unable to play, Oleaga was thrust into the role of backup with Unai Simón the starter.
The club has always been impressed with Oleaga. He may not get the attention that others have such as Kepa Arrizabalaga or Unai Simón, but the 21-year-old is a talented young keeper. In fact, several clubs have shown interest in signing him to be the starter for their reserve teams, but Oleaga wants to stay at Athletic. He and the club are currently negotiating a contract renewal with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
On Wednesday Iago Herrerín finally received medical clearance which will allow him to play once again. It took nearly two months for the 30-year-old to get the medical green light and during that time Oleaga has been a constant face around the first team. However, now that Herrerín is available again Oleaga has become surplus in Berizzo’s squad.
Oleaga did not train with the first team on Thursday and was instead back with Bilbao Athletic. Now the 21-year-old will be able to set his focus on challenging Unai Etxebarria for the starting role as he looks to prove himself worthy of a permanent place in the senior squad. Meanwhile, the club will be keeping a close eye on the Lezama product whom they have been impressed with over the past few months.
