Iñigo Martinez Hopes To Play On Friday Against Real Sociedad, Berizzo Showing Caution With Aritz Aduriz
Iñigo Martinez is in a race against time. Real Sociedad are coming to the San Mamés on Friday for Athletic’s first Basque Derby of the season and the 27-year-old hopes that he will be able to play. Martinez suffered an injured thigh muscle in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Barcelona, but it was only diagnosed as a deep bruise which means that he could be cleared in time to be available.
The defender was unable to train with his teammates on Tuesday at Lezama, but did enjoy a small level of participation on Wednesday. Martinez was seen jogging with trainer Xabi Clemente and even did some work with the ball. He was not a part of any drills with the rest of the team, but he has already shown positivity that suggests that there is a chance that he could be cleared by Friday.
If Martinez is unable to feature the most likely scenario will see Peru Nolaskoain take his spot in the lineup once again. During Wednesday’s training session Eduardo Berizzo did have the players split into teams for a while and seemingly tipped his hand for Friday’s match. The lineup was exactly the same as the one that started against Barcelona on Saturday, except for Nolaskoain being in Martinez’s place.
At the same time, the club continues to show caution with Aritz Aduriz who has missed significant time with hamstring and thigh problems. On Tuesday the striker only participated in the first half of training then left for the dressing room. He did so again on Wednesday, but while he was on the field he trained at the same pace and intensity as the rest of his teammates. Berizzo has been clear that the 37-year-old isn’t ready to play full games again yet and that they will work him back into the lineup carefully.
