Iago Herrerín Has Been Medically Cleared To Return To Action
It’s Derby week and over the next few days Athletic will be solely focused on preparing for Friday’s match against Real Sociedad. Out of everyone, Iago Herrerín may be the most excited of all. The 30-year-old has missed nearly two months of action after suffering a biceps injury in early August and is eager to get back on the field. He returned to training in September and is now ready to make his return.
In a recent interview, manager Eduardo Berizzo said that Herrerín was close to making his return. That day finally came on Wednesday when Athletic announced that the goalkeeper has finally been medically cleared to play again and is now available to participate in games. It’s been a longer road to recovery than expected, but for Herrerín the wait is over.
While he has been out, Unai Simón has proven himself capable of performing at a very high level in the Primera. Now that Herrerín will be making his return he will have to battle the 21-year-old for the starting role moving forward. It will be up to Berizzo to decide how to handle the situation but there is no denying that Herrerín wants to play. Regardless of who starts on Friday or in the games ahead, having the 30-year-old back in the team is a big addition for Athletic Club.
