Athletic Club Have Begun Contract Negotiations With Iker Muniain, Unai Simón, And Others
After what has been an interesting start to the La Liga season, Athletic have several issues surrounding the club that President Josu Urrutia will need to attend to. On Wednesday he appeared before the media where he discussed the situation with Alex Remiro, the state of the club financially, and gave some more details on Peru Nolaskoain’s recent renewal. Urrutia also made it clear that more extensions will follow.
The President was asked about other players in the squad who are in need of new contracts and he was quick to reveal that several of them are already in the works. Captain Iker Muniain is the most pressing matter and negotiations are underway, but others are in line for upgraded deals as well.
“We have opened negotiations with Iker Muniain, as we have with others. As always, once something is finalized we will announce it. Unai Simón’s contract has to be different. He’s proving himself. We are always there with an offer in hand when that is the case. We have also begun renewal negotiations with Hodei Oleaga, but there are others as well.”
Apart from the players mentioned above, there are several others who are in need of new contracts. Oscar De Marcos, Markel Susaeta, Aritz Aduriz, Mikel Balenziaga, Ander Iturraspe, and Mikel Rico are all in the final year of their current deals. It will be interesting to see what decisions the club makes moving forward but De Marcos and Susaeta have already made it clear that they plan to stay at the San Mamés and are expected to receive renewal offers. Aduriz will decide his own future as he has done for the past few years, but the others will need to prove themselves worthy of a new contract this season.
