Alex Remiro Refuses To Sign Contract Renewal And Wants To Leave Athletic Club
The drama surrounding Alex Remiro has refused to go away. After seeing Kepa Arrizabalaga leave for Chelsea over the summer it appeared as though Remiro would quickly become the new star goalkeeper at Athletic, but that didn’t happen. Contract disputes saw the club make the decision to not even call up the 23-year-old for games this season and now there is more clarity.
On Wednesday, Josu Urrutia addressed the media and Alex Remiro’s situation was one of the big topics of discussion. The President revealed that the player has told the club that he will not sign a contract renewal and wants to leave. With his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, his time in Bilbao is quickly drawing to a close.
“The representative of Alex Remiro has informed us that he does not want to continue at the club. As a club member, Remiro’s decision did not sit well with me. It’s not the first time this has happened, but we will keep moving forward and working so that every Athletic player wants to stay here. The payers must have their share of commitment to this club. We don’t know anything about whether anyone has an agreement with Remiro. I don’t even know it that is legal. What we do know is that doesn’t want to renew.”
Urrutia went on to compare Remiro’s contract situation with that of Kepa Arrizabalaga last year. Kepa was open to holding negotiations, while Remiro has essentially refused to talk to the club or give his demands for a new deal. For now he will continue to train with the team and Athletic are not looking to sell him in the upcoming January transfer window.
“The situation with Remiro is clear. Unai Simón has been great and Iago Herrerín has been cleared to play again. Alex will have to continue training, although it is true that he has teammates who have shown that they want to be here. With Kepa’s renewal there were negotiations and in the case of Remiro, what we know is that he doesn’t want to renew. He has not given any conditions that would make him stay and we know that he doesn’t want to continue here. The club has not thought about letting him leave during the winter transfer window and he hasn’t asked us for that. This situation will not affect the locker room.”
As of now it seems very clear that Alex Remiro will be leaving Athletic Club. The goalkeeper does not want to renew and will be free to talk to other clubs in January before his contract expires in June. In the meantime, Athletic have put their faith in Unai Simón who has played at a very high level this season and Iago Herrerín will also be making his return after receiving medical clearance on Wednesday.
