It has been a whirlwind of a season for Peru Nolaskoain. The 19-year-old was called up to the first team over the summer where new manager Eduardo Berizzo immediately began transitioning him from midfield to center-back. It didn’t take long for the Lezama product to pick up the position where he has now played three La Liga matches. As has been expected for nearly a week now, Athletic have now rewarded the player with a new contract.

On Tuesday Athletic Club officially announced that Peru Nolaskoain had signed a contract extension through 2024. His current deal was set to expire at the end of the season and the Lions were eager to secure his future at the San Mamés. The new deal also raises his release clause from €8 million to €60 million and significantly improves his wages to better reflect his current status in the first team.

After the announcement Peru Nolaskoain then appeared before the media to discuss his renewal and what it means to him. He also revealed that the rumors about Real Sociedad making him an offer were true. La Real were willing to pay his then-€8 million release clause but the 19-year-old only wanted to stay at Athletic where he believes he has a bright future and is very happy.

“I’m very happy to renew with Athletic and belong to this club and family. I hope it’s the first of renewals. This year I have had the opportunity to make my debut with the first team and it’s been dream come true. Everything has happened very fast and without setbacks. It’s true that I had an offer from Real Sociedad. I had an opportunity to leave for Real but I had no doubt. I wanted to stay at Athletic. Athletic has given me everything and we have to be grateful in this life. The club has bet strongly on me and I have to reward them.”

With a new contract in place Peru Nolaskoain is currently preparing for Friday’s Basque Derby with the rest of his teammates. With Iñigo Martinez unlikely to play due to a thigh injury Nolaskoain is expected to start against Real Sociedad in what will be a very big stage for the teenager. Regardless, it’s clear that Nolaskoain has already shown incredible talent and promise at such a young age and now he has committed his future to Athletic Club.
