Peru Nolaskoain “Athletic Has Given Me Everything”
Peru Nolaskoain committed his future to Athletic Club on Tuesday when the 19-year-old penned a new contract that will run through 2024. The new deal also sees his release clause raise to €60 million and comes with a hefty salary increase as well. Speaking to the media after the announcement, the defender could not hold back his excitement and says that he owes everything to Athletic.
“I’m very happy to renew with Athletic and belong to this club and family. I hope it’s the first of renewals. This year I have had the opportunity to make my debut with the first team and it’s been dream come true. Everything has happened very fast and without setbacks. Athletic has given me everything and we have to be grateful in this life. The club has bet strongly on me and I have to reward them.”
Nolaskoain went on to thank manager Eduardo Berizzo for giving him the opportunity to make his first team debut. Making the witch to center-back was not easy, but he enjoys playing the position now.
“The Mister is the one who decided that I should be promoted and that is what has allowed me to fulfill a dream. I went up to the first team with the hope of proving myself. I wanted to stay and I’m here now. I had never played center-back before but now it’s the position I am most comfortable in because I’m training there every day.”
In closing, the 19-year-old confirmed recent rumors that claimed Real Sociedad had offered to pay his then-€8 million release clause over the summer. Nolaskoain said he turned down the proposal because he wanted to stay at Athletic.
“It’s true that I had an offer from Real Sociedad. I had an opportunity to leave for Real but I had no doubt. I wanted to stay at Athletic and my mind was very clear.”
Peru Nolaskoain and his teammates are now preparing for Friday’s Basque Derby that will see Real Sociedad visit the San Mamés. The two clubs are separated in the table by only one point and this game promises to be as fiery as ever. It will be another big stage for Nolaskoain if the Lezama product plays, but he’s already shown that he can handle the pressure.
