Athletic Club Reportedly Showing Interest In Bringing Ibai Gómez Back To The San Mamés
It has been three years since Ibai Gomez left Athletic and he’s now playing the best football of his career. Since joining Alavés back in 2016 the winger has scored 17 goals, the same amount that he scored during his time in Bilbao, but it has only taken him 80 games to do so as opposed to the 145 he competed in with Athletic. This season he’s already found the back of the net three times and is playing at a sensational level.
Naturally, he’s caught the eye of Athletic who have been watching him closely since they allowed him to leave for free. According to an exclusive report from Robert Basíc of El Correo, Athletic have already shown interest in bringing Gómez back to the San Mamés next summer. In fact, the club is said to have already reached out to the player to get an idea of his intentions moving forward. The 28-year-old’s current contract with Alavés is set to expire after this season which means that he will be free to talk to other clubs in January.
Despite Athletic’s interest, any potential move would come down solely to Ibai Gómez. The winger opened up in a recent interview where he revealed that he struggled to handle the pressure while playing for Athletic and has felt free since joining Alavés. That relief has surely played a role in his form over the past few years and will likely affect any decisions that he makes regarding his future.
Athletic may be the club that Gómez has always loved, but he is happy at Alavés and they have already made it clear to the player that they intend to offer him a contract renewal. Those negotiations have not yet begun, but Alavés hope to retain their star player. With his current deal set to expire next summer it is only a matter of time before the 28-year-old has to start making some difficult decisions about his career going forward.
Ibai Gómez is a different person than the one who left Athletic back in 2016. He’s grown up a lot, improved as a footballer, and has become a leader and a father. He has a family now and will be 29 years old next month. As Athletic’s interest continues to grow this will be a story to watch closely leading up to January when he will be free to talk with other clubs. Only time will tell what Ibai Gómez wants to do next with his career and the decision will be his to make.
