Iñigo Martinez Diagnosed With Thigh Muscle Injury, Doubtful To Play Against Real Sociedad
Iñigo Martinez was forced to leave Saturday’s match against Barcelona after just 22 minutes due to pain in his thigh. The defender tried to carry own after suffering a blow, but eventually had to be taken off which was followed by immediate concern. At halftime the club announced that he had sustained a possible muscle injury and would undergo further tests. It now looks like he will miss Friday’s Basque Derby against Real Sociedad.
On Monday Athletic released a medical report stating that Martinez has been diagnosed with a right thigh muscle injury and his recovery time will depend on how his body responds to treatment. The good news is that the club revealed that the injury was caused by a contusion, so it doesn’t sound like the muscle is actually torn (strained). This likely means that it isn’t a serious issue, although muscle injuries can be very unpredictable. Although his availability for Friday’s game is doubtful, there is a chance that Martinez could recover in time to play against his former club.
The players had the day off on Monday and will be back in training on Tuesday, although it is unlikely that Martinez will be able to participate. With the 27-year-old in question for Friday’s match, Eduardo Berizzo could once again turn to Peru Nolaskoain at left center-back. The 19-year-old has showed great maturity and quality at the position since making the switch over the summer. Above all else, the hope is that Iñigo Martinez will not miss significant time. If he is able to return to normal training this week he could still be available on Friday which means his participation in practice will be something to watch closely.
