Gaizka Garitano Unhappy With Heavy Usage Of Bilbao Athletic Players During Club’s U23 Match
Bilbao Athletic lost their first game of the season over the weekend and manager Gaizka Garitano is standing firm over what he believes to be the reason. The club played their first match in the Premier League U23 International Cup on Wednesday which saw 14 of Garitano’s players called to the squad. It left the manager with only one day of training going into the game against Real Oviedo B who defeated the Katxorros 2-1.
After the match Garitano stated, “Today was affected by the game on Wednesday in England, knowing that next we would likely lose”. Most of the starting lineup was composed of Bilbao Athletic players which not only kept Garitano from being able to properly practice leading up to the game against Oviedo, but it also forced the manager to have to rotate the lineup.
Taking into account the fact that Oihan Sancet and Iñigo Baqué have been lost for the season due to injuries, the frustration is understandable. Others like Peru Nolaskoain and Hodei Oleaga have also been with the first team, but Garitano has been clear about the fact that players getting called up to the senior squad is a good thing. According to Juanma Velasco of Marca, Garitano will be meeting with Sporting Director Jose María Amorrortu soon to discuss the issue.
Bilbao Athletic held a solid lead at the top of the table going into Saturday’s game against Real Oviedo B, but the loss has now seen the Katxorros fall to third just one point behind Racing and Barakaldo. They will be back in action on Saturday as they host UD Logroñés at Lezama where they haven’t lost in over a year. Meanwhile, the U23 team will play again on 14 November against Norwich City.
