Ander Iturraspe “It’s A Very Disappointing Result”
Athletic suffered their first loss of the season on Wednesday when they fell to Villarreal 3-0 at the San Mamés. Ander Iturraspe made his first start of the season in place of Dani García and after the game he spoke with Athletic TV about the result. The midfielder admitted that it was a bad game, but doesn’t think the scoreline was a perfect reflection.
“It is a very disappointing result. I don’t think 3-0 is an accurate score for how the game was played, but we have to keep working. We have to continue playing our style of football. It was a bad game, I’m sure there will be others, but all that we can do is keep working. We were able to be successful with our pressure against Real Madrid and Betis, but today we weren’t.”
Iturraspe went on to say that the Lions wanted to play their style of football, but weren’t able to create chances. After Villarreal scored their first goal it completely changed the match which led to two more goals.
“At the beginning we came out with the goal of dominating possession and pressing with a high line. We weren’t able to find the final pass or cross and our opponents were able to jump past our pressure with their forwards. The first goal was a real goal because they created it from nothing. The second goal I thought was a clear foul against Iñigo [Martinez]. At that point we were broken.”
When asked about his place in the team, Iturraspe made it clear that he isn’t thinking about his contract situation. He understands that the coach is the one who decides who plays and all he is focused on is making the most of his opportunities when called on.
“The coach is the one who makes the decisions. When you are chosen you have to go out and do your best to help the team. I know my contract ends after this year, but it isn’t something that worries me. I want to contribute to the team. We all know that there are a lot of players in the squad and we all have to fight for our position. ”
Athletic will now turn their attention to this weekend’s matchup against Barcelona. The game at the Camp Nou will be the toughest of the season so far and Berizzo is expected to field his strongest lineup. Dani García and Markel Susaeta will be back in the team and Aritz Aduriz should return after missing time with a thigh injury. If the Lions wants to take points away from the Catalans they will have to play their best and preparations have already begun.
