Ander Capa “The Game Was Much Closer Than The Final Score”

Ander Capa

After a strong start to the season Athletic suffered their first loss on Wednesday night against Villarreal at the San Mamés. After the game Ander Capa spoke with Athletic TV and said that the scoreline didn’t reflect how close the match actually was. He highlighted the fact that the team performed well until surrendering the first goal which was the difference maker.

“We went into the game with the same attitude and same intensity as every other game. The team did well in all facets of the game until Villarreal scored the first goal. We played well, but we needed a goal. We weren’t able to find an opening in their defense. We had a lot of possession, but no clear chances. We had to improve in that area. After they scored against us we tried to open up the field and that hurt us. Afterwards, we exposed ourselves more and they were able to score a couple more. The final score was unbelievable because the game was much closer.”

Capa started the game at right-wing, the position he grew up playing before making the switch to right-back several years ago. He said that he was comfortable in the attacking role and that he is available for whatever the team needs. There is a lot of excitement surrounding Athletic and Capa just wants to focus on the next game.

“I’ve played a few games this season at left-back, but this was the first time a few years that I’ve played on the wing. I was fairly comfortable, but there are challenges. I’m here for whatever the Mister needs. We have no time to think about the defeat. It was step back, but we must look forwards and upwards. The fans are very excited about the team and that will always encourage us.”

Ander Capa and Athletic Club will be taking on Barcelona over the weekend in what will be the most difficult matchup of the season so far. The Lions will have to travel to the Camp Nou, but will see the returns of Dani García, Markel Susaeta, and Aritz Aduriz who all missed the game against Villarreal for different reasons. After a disappointing loss Athletic are looking to get back on the right track.
