Peru Nolaskoain Reportedly Agrees To Contract Extension With Athletic Club
Peru Nolaskoain has been one of the biggest stories surrounding Athletic Club since the summer began. The 19-year-old, who spent all his life as a midfielder, was promoted to the first team where Eduardo Berizzo immediately began transitioning him to center-back. At first the move seemed strange but Nolaskoain has hit the ground running and is getting better with every passing day.
The Lezama product has admitted that he has enjoyed playing defense and is trying to learn as much as he can from his teammates. He started the first two games of the season alongside Yeray and showed a great understanding of positioning and the ability to win back possession. He has been strong in the air, a capable tackler, and his ability to pass the ball has translated perfectly from his time as a midfielder. It may still be early in the process, but Nolaskoain already looks comfortable and capable in a more defensive role.
The summer was a trying time for the 19-year-old. Not only was he learning a completely new position, but reports claim that he was also contacted by Real Sociedad who were willing to pay his €8 million release clause to bring him to the Anoeta. Nolaskoain rejected the offer in favor of staying with Athletic where he believes he will have the chance to earn a regular place in the first team. Berizzo was asked about the situation during a press conference on Tuesday and very clearly stated that the player wouldn’t be going anywhere. The two sides have been in contract negotiations for a few weeks and Nolaskoain’s future at the San Mamés now looks secure.
According to a breaking report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, the new contract has been finalized and the agreement is complete. As expected, Nolaskoain will extend his current deal for 5 or 6 more seasons and will also see his release clause substantially increased. The belief is that the new clause will be somewhere between €50-60 million, but it could be even higher. Nolaskoain will also see his wages increased to reflect his current status as a first team player.
With the new deal reportedly complete the only thing remaining is the announcement. Velasco says that the goal was to announce the renewal sometime next week, which just so happens to be the week of the Basque Derby against Real Sociedad, but also stated that it could take place at any time. Peru Nolaskoain has pledged his future to Athletic Club who view him as an important player for the future and someone is capable competing in the first team now at only 19 years old.
