Iñigo Baqué Diagnosed With Torn ACL After Injury Against Gernika
Despite Bilbao Athletic’s fantastic start to the season they haven’t been able to avoid serious injuries. At the beginning of September Oihan Sancet suffered a torn ACL during the team’s draw against Gimnástica which forced manager Gaizka Garitano to make some major changes in the lineup. Now he will have to do it again as another key player will likely miss the remainder of the year.
Iñigo Baqué fell awkwardly during Bilbao Athletic’s 3-0 win over Gernika on Saturday and immediately grabbed his right knee in pain. The medical team rushed onto the field and could be seen performing an ACL test and then allowed the midfielder to walk off under his own power. Further tests were carried out and on Tuesday Athletic officially announced that the 21-year-old had suffered a torn ACL. He will be have a consultation in the coming days before scheduling his surgery.
With two key midfielder now likely out for the rest of the season, Garitano will have to make some major adjustments to the team. Unai Vencedor is the last one left from the midfielder trio that started the season together and it is likely that Iñigo Vicente will continue to function as the Mediapunta moving forward. Others will also have to step up in a major way. Sancet and Baqué are both very promising young players who now have to, unfortunately, face a very long road to recovery.
