Mikel Balenziaga “I’m Here For Whatever The Coach Wants”
Mikel Balenziaga featured in his first game of the season on Sunday as Athletic Club faced off with Real Betis. The Lions led 2-0 early in the first half, but Markel Susaeta was picked up two yellow cards which changed the course of the game. The defender spoke with reporters after the match and admitted that it was good to be back on the field, but lamented the result at the Benito Villamarín.
“We pressed our opponents very well. We were good with the ball and deserved to be leading 2-0. We struggled to withstand Betis’s siege while down a man, but we have to know how to handle the adversity. I felt very comfortable on the field, very comfortable. I’m happy for these minutes. As always, I’m here for whatever the coach wants. I’m where I want to be. We are all happy with the coach and I must take advantage of all the minutes he gives me. We have 25 players in the squad and the coach is the one who chooses the lineup. The key to being called on is be at the top of your game at all times.”
Athletic Club have entered a demanding stretch of the season that will see them play Villarreal, Barcelona, and Real Sociedad over the next 12 days. Eduardo Berizzo will need to rotate his team in order to keep players fresh which should continue to give Balenziaga the chance to prove himself. For now the Lions will begin preparing for Wednesday’s match against Villarreal which will take place at the San Mamés.
