Iñaki Williams “We Were Very Good In The First Half, But The Red Card Changed Everything”
Athletic looked to be cruising to a victory at the Benito Villamarín on Sunday when they led Real Betis 2-0 after just twenty minutes of play. However, Markel Susaeta received two yellow cards before the end of the first half which changed the entire complexity of the match. Speaking to beIN Sports after the game, Iñaki Williams admitted that the sending off forced Athletic to throw their game plan out the window.
“We played a good game. It’s a shame, a shame. We were very good in the first half and the goals came from turnovers that we forced by pressing. Then the red card changed everything. Real Betis are very good and demanded a lot from us in the second half. They moved the ball very well and being a man down made it harder to pressure them. The sending off broke our game plan, but I think the point is fair because the match was even. We want to see that same first half performance in every game this year.”
Williams went on to praise Athletic’s ability to pressure Betis in the first half. Although the red card saw the Lions only pick up a point, the forward is happy to have scored a goal and is hoping to continue finding the back of the net as the season progresses.
“We knew that Betis were going to take some risks so we had to push very high. In the first half we were able to control the ball and create good chances. The sending off is what cost us. On a personal level I’m happy with my performance. Scoring a goal is always important for a forward and I hope that there are more to come. I want to celebrate at the San Mamés. I always try to help the team and if that’s by scoring goals then it’s even better.”
Athletic Club will now be preparing for Wednesday’s game against Villarreal which will take place at the San Mamés. The Lions are unbeaten so far in La Liga and will be looking to keep that run alive when they welcome the Yellow Submarine. They will be without Markel Susaeta who is now suspended for the next match, but will hopefully see the return of Aritz Aduriz who missed the game against Real Betis due to thigh muscle discomfort.
