Iñigo Baqué Suffers Knee Injury During Win Over Gernika
After seeing several key players leave Bilbao Athletic over the summer, Iñigo Baqué has taken on a vital role in the team. The 21-year-old started the first four matches of the season as the defensive midfielder and has played at a high level, however on Saturday he began the game on the bench with Peru Nolaskoain in his place. Baqué did come on at the beginning of the second half, but things did not go as planned.
In the 63rd minute Baqué took an awkward fall and was in clear pain and favoring his right knee. The medical team came out to tend to the midfielder and could be seen performing an ACL test while he was on the ground. After a few moments he was helped to his feet and was able to walk off of the field under his own power. Antoni Salado was then brought on to replace Baqué for the remainder of the game.
After the match was over Athletic issued a press release stating that Baqué had suffered a sprained right knee and that he would be undergoing further tests. He will likely have his additional tests at the beginning of the week, which is how Athletic usually handles things like this. The hope is that the evaluations will not reveal anything more serious and that the 21-year-old will be able to return to action quickly.
