Athletic Club Begin Contract Renewal Talks With Goalkeeper Hodei Oleaga
Hodei Oleaga may have spent the last few years in the shadows of players like Kepa Arrizabalaga and Alex Remiro, but the 21-year-old has showed great promise. In the 2015/2016 season the goalkeeper split time with Unai Simón at CD Basconia before eventually becoming his backup at Bilbao Athletic last season. Over the summer he was called up to train with the first team and the move has turned into much more than anyone expected.
With Kepa Arrizabalaga leaving for Chelsea and Iago Herrerín suffering a biceps injury, Unai Simón was thrust into the starting role which also saw Oleaga become the backup for the first team. Although he has yet to make his debut other clubs have taken notice. Several Primera teams have been monitoring the Lezama product with hopes of signing him to be the starting goalkeeper for their reserve sides.
Despite the interest, Oleaga fully intends to stay with Athletic and the two sides have already begun renewal talks according to a report from Javier Beltran of AS. The goalkeeper’s current deal is set to expire after the end of this season and his agent is expected to meet with the club soon to discuss their proposal. Negotiations are only in the preliminary stages at this point but the belief is that it should be relatively straightforward to finalize an agreement.
Before being called up by Eduardo Berizzo, Oleaga was set to be the starting goalkeeper for Bilbao Athletic this season. Once Iago Herrerín is cleared to play Oleaga will return to the reserves where he will be able to play regular minutes and continue developing. The 21-year-old has improved a lot over the past two years and the club has taken notice. Signing a new contract will secure Oleaga’s future at Athletic and give him the opportunity to prove himself worthy of a place in the first team.
