Peru Nolaskoain Will Play With Bilbao Athletic Against Gernika On Saturday
Iñigo Martinez has finally conquered the calf strain that sidelined the defender for the entirety of the preseason and the opening two games of the La Liga campaign. He played his first game of the year last weekend against Real Madrid and already looks to be in great form. With the 27-year-old back in the team Peru Nolaskoain will now find it harder to enjoy minutes which has led to some creativity from the coaching staff.
The most important thing for Nolaskoain, and other young players in the first team, is to play regular minutes. Eduardo Berizzo said before the season began that he would send young stars to Bilbao Athletic when they weren’t needed and this weekend will see that happen for the first time. The 19-year-old will not be traveling to Seville for the game against Real Betis and instead will be competing with Bilbao Athletic as the Katxorros host Gernika Club at Lezama.
Nolaskoain has been one of the revelations of the early season and Berizzo wants him to play as much as possible. With Martinez expected to start against Real Betis Nolaskoain likely wouldn’t even feature which is what prompted the manager to send him to the reserves for this weekend. The Lions will be playing three games over the next seven days so there is a very good chance that Nolaskoain will return to the first team very quickly as Berizzo will be looking to rotate the lineup.
In the meantime, Athletic and Nolaskoain have been in negotiations over a contract renewal which is expected to be finalized soon. The Lezama product will likely extend his deal for 4-5 seasons and see his €8 million release clause climb to somewhere between €30-40 million to reflect his current status at the club. Real Sociedad attempted to sign the starlet over the summer, but Nolaskoain rejected their offer in favor of staying at Athletic where he believes he will have the chance to earn his place in the first team this season.
