Iago Herrerín Eagerly Waiting For Medical Clearance To Return To Action
As Athletic prepare for Sunday’s match against Real Betis Iago Herrerín is still on the sidelines. The goalkeeper suffered a biceps muscle injury on 9 August and, although he avoided needing surgery, the initial diagnosis had the 30-year-old out until the middle of October. Always the hard worker, Herrerín was able to return to training just one month later but still hasn’t been able to play.
In recent press conferences manager Eduardo Berizzo has stated that if it were up to Herrerín he would be playing. It has been nearly two weeks since he returned to full training, but the goalkeeper is still waiting for medical clearance before he can be available for matches. The team doctors and the player have been working together on his rehabilitation and the hope is that his return is just around the corner.
According to several sources Herrerín is expected to miss the next few matches which will see Athletic face Real Betis, Villarreal, and Barcelona over the course of seven days. ” Berizzo recently admitted in a press conference that the goalkeeper will be able to return in “a couple of weeks”.
In the meantime, Unai Simón has started all three games to start the season and the 21-year-old has played at a very high level. Whenever Herrerín is finally cleared to return to action there will be a battle for the starting goalkeeper role and it will be up to Eduardo Berizzo to sort things out moving forward.
