New-Look CD Basconia Still Trying To Find Their Rhythm After A Poor Start To The Season
Since becoming Athletic’s feeder club in 1997 CD Basconia have never been relegated from the Tercera. They have had great years and terrible years, but the team has done a fine job of preparing Lezama players for the jump up to Bilbao Athletic which is the most important thing. Over the past four seasons Basconia have flirted with relegation with a 10th place finish being their best mark over that timeframe. Last year under manager Ander Alaña the club finished 15th in the table which brought changes over the summer.
Athletic’s Juvenil A team had one of the best seasons in recent history last year, due in part to the immensely talented squad as well as manager Aritz Solabarrieta. Over the summer Solabarrieta was named as the manager for CD Basconia in addition to 10 of his players from Juvenil A being promoted to the club. With several others leaving for Bilbao Athletic, Basconia essentially became a brand new team which brought plenty of excitement about the upcoming campaign.
Despite the talented young players and exciting coaching change, it has been much of the same for Basconia. In the first game of the season Basconia earned a 2-2 draw at home, but since then they have suffered three consecutive defeats. They currently find themselves at the bottom of the table after four matches and are in desperate need of finding their rhythm.
With so many new faces in the team, and many of them having just been promoted, it isn’t surprising to see the team struggling early on. Defenders like Aitor Paredes and Imanol García de Albéniz are learning what it takes to face professional opponents while forwards Ruben Azcona and Ewan Urain are going up against the toughest competition they’ve ever seen.
At the same time, it’s also worth mentioning that the group promoted to Basconia over the summer are without midfielders Oihan Sancet and Unai Vencedor. The pair were the most influential players for the Juvenil A team last season and made the jump straight to Bilbao Athletic. Solabarrieta is still looking to find the right fit in the midfield and it will be up to the likes of Gorka Estrada, Youssouf Diarra, Gorka Agirre and others to rise to the occasion.
Although developing young talent is the biggest goal for CD Basconia, the club also wants to be competitive and successful. It will take some time for the players to settle into a rhythm and that responsibility falls on Solabarrieta. The squad may be young, but it’s incredibly talented. It will now be up to the coach to help the team shake off the growing pains and establish their identity over the coming weeks.
