Unai Simón “I Am Gaining Confidence And Hope To Continue Playing At This Level”

Unai Simon

Simón has been exceptional in his first three Primera matches (AC)

If there were any fans that hadn’t yet given Unai Simón their full support that all changed on Saturday. The 21-year-old made several outstanding saves against a deadly Real Madrid team to help Athletic earn a 1-1 draw and the San Mamés took notice. Afterwards the goalkeeper spoke with Alfonso Herrán of AS and said that the performance over the weekend is what Athletic should strive for all season.

“It was a great match with a lot of physical play. If you relax, they will score against you. They key was that we went out to win the game. Real Madrid are always very strong and if you lower your energy they will make you pay. We didn’t do that and we earned a very valuable draw. Playing with our intensity is difficult to do for a full 90 minutes, but we trust our system. This is the Athletic that we want to see at home and throughout the year.”

Simón went on to praise the fans who were very involved throughout the entire match. He believes that the Lions had chances to win the game, but says that the team should still be happy with the result and the way they played. After three games in the first division Simón is gaining confidence and wants to keep improving.

“The fans were plugged in the entire time which was great. There was a bad taste in our mouth because there was chances to win the game, but it was still an outstanding match. There is an enormous desire to do something special this year. We have played good matches and we have to continue in this form. I try to help in any way that I can, against Madrid or any other club. I went home very happy. It’s a pity we couldn’t get the three points, but we should be pleased. I am gaining confidence and I hope to continue playing at this level.”

With the match against Real Madrid behind them Athletic will now turn their attention to Sunday’s game against Real Betis. It will be the first away fixture of the season which will present a brand new test for Unai Simón. The Basques will be looking to continue their unbeaten run to start the year and will be facing yet another difficult opponent.
