The Bilbao Athletic lineup against Leioa (SD Leioa)

Bilbao Athletic played their fourth game of the season on Saturday when they traveled to Estadio Sarriena to take on SD Leioa in the Bizkaia Derby. Both clubs were undefeated going into the match but it was the Katxorros who were looking to keep their place at the top of the table. It wouldn’t take long at all for Gaizka Garitano’s side to assert their dominance.

Just three minutes into the game Bilbao Athletic forced a turnover in the midfield and the ball was immediately played wide to Iñigo Vicente on the left wing. The 20-year-old dribbled into the box, beat his defender, and fired a shot across the face of the box. The ball struck the far post and went into the back of the net to give the Katxorros an early 1-0 lead at Sarriena.

The goal gave Bilbao Athletic immense confidence and they continued to attack in waves as Leioa struggled to find possession. In the 26th minute the visitors would strike again. A throw-in saw Vicente in behind the defense on the right wing and the forward sent in a low cross into the box. It found Iñigo Muñoz who volleyed his effort past the keeper to double the lead.

Bilbao Athletic refused to take their foot off the gas and would be rewarded with a third goal before halftime. After a throw-in the ball became loose in the midfield and Iñigo Baqué was able to chip it over the defense to Gaizka Larrazabal who was making a run on goal. The 20-year-old settled and calmly slotted his shot to make it 3-0 before the whistle sounded.

Leioa refused to go down without a fight. In the 71st minute they earned a corner kick and made the most of the chance when Aitor Córdoba was able to score at the far post. Although they were still down by two goals the home side had new life and went on the attack. Bilbao Athletic found it hard to string together passes and began to get pinned in their own third.

Just when it looked like the game may be opening up, the Katxorros would finish it off. A loose ball was recovered by Asier Benito who immediately played Iñigo Vicente in on goal. The forward confidently brought the ball into the box and chipped the goalkeeper to make it 4-1 in the 83rd minute which settled the score and gave Bilbao Athletic all three points. With the win Gaizka Garitano’s team remain undefeated and keep their place at the top of the table.
