Sabin Merino “I’m From Bilbao And Every Child From There Dreams Of Playing For Athletic”
Sabin Merino is determined to continue his career at Athletic Club. The forward will see his contract expire after this season and accepted an offer to join Leganés on loan in the final hours of the transfer window. He knows that playing regular minutes will give him the best chance to earn an extension and on Wednesday he was officially presented as the newest Leganés player.
The 26-year-old admitted that it was hard to leave his boyhood club, while also making it clear that his goal is to continue playing for Athletic after this season. Since he was in need of regular playing time he was very appreciative of the offer from Leganés and is hoping to make the most of it.
“I want to thank Leganés for bringing me in the way they did. The truth is that it was very difficult to leave Lezama. I’ve been there almost my entire life. I’m from Bilbao and every child from there dreams of playing for Athletic. We all aspire to play the most minutes possible and Leganés have placed their trust in me. That is why I am here and I’m very grateful for their faith in me.”
The forward went on to explain that seeing other former Athletic players, like Unai Bustinza and Javi Eraso, doing so well at Leganés also helped influence his decision to accept the loan offer. Merino highlighted his own versatility in attack, but says that he is ready for whatever the manager needs from him.
“I’m lucky to have met a lot of players here that have made it easier for me. I was told that it was a very close club, like a family, and that is what I have experienced. Former Athletic players like Bustinza and Eraso have progressed a lot here which was more incentive to come. My whole life I’ve played in attacking positions. I started playing as a forward, but alternated more at Bilbao Athletic and was able to be used on both wings. I can play anywhere in attack and I’m ready for however the coach wants to use me.”
Sabin Merino knows that this could very well be the most important season of his career. If he is able to play at a high level he will most likely receive a renewal offer, but if he continues to struggle his time at Athletic may very well be over. The forward is hoping to make the most of this loan move and is determined to fight for his future. Now that he has been officially presented and has had a few weeks to train with his new teammates, Sabin Merino could make his Leaganés debut this Sunday against Villarreal.
