Lions Return From International Duty, Iñigo Martinez Could Play Against Real Madrid
The Spain National Team defeated Croatia in thrilling fashion thanks to a 6-0 win in the Nations League, but Iñigo Martinez was not a part of the festivities. The Athletic Club defender, who has just recovered from a calf injury, was unable to train on Monday due to muscle discomfort and was forced to miss Tuesday’s game. On Wednesday he made his return to Bilbao and things look positive.
Only the first 15 minutes of training were open to the public, but Martinez was seen warming up with the rest of his teammates and would go on to be a full participant during the session. When he missed practice with Spain it was out of precaution and now it appears as though it truly wasn’t anything serious. As of now he has yet to be ruled out for this weekend’s clash with Real Madrid and could finally make his season debut.
The decision will ultimately be up to manager Eduardo Berizzo and there is no guarantee that Martinez will start. Toto will be assessing the situation so as not to risk Martinez, but there is no denying that team would be stronger with the 27-year-old on the pitch. Berizzo will wait to see how the defender responds to training the rest of the week before making the final decision.
At the same time, Unai Simón and Unai Nuñez have also returned from international duty with the Spain U21 team and were in training on Wednesday. As things stand right now Simón is expected to start in goal once again for Athletic with Iago Herrerín very close to making his return from a biceps injury. After nursing a hamstring injury over the past few weeks, Aritz Aduriz has been training normally as well and will be available for Saturday’s game at the San Mamés
