Iñigo Martinez Misses Spain Training With Muscle Discomfort
It hasn’t been the start to the season that Iñigo Martinez hoped for. The defender was forced to miss the entirety of the preseason due to a calf strain, but was thankfully able to return to regular training before the campaign began. However, he has yet to feature for Athletic with manager Eduardo Berizzo wanting the 27-year-old to get back into a rhythm first.
Martinez was then called up by Spain coach Luis Enrique for the international break where he played the final 10 minutes of the game against England over the weekend. All signs have pointed to the defender being back in Athletic’s starting lineup on Saturday against Real Madrid but that is now in jeopardy.
On Monday Spain announced that Martinez had missed the day’s training session out of precaution with “slight muscle discomfort”. At this point there is no information on what exactly was plaguing him, but the belief is that it isn’t anything serious. There is still hope that Martinez will be able to play against Real Madrid, however if his calf is the issue again Athletic could choose to be cautious with their star defender.
