Aritz Aduriz And Iago Herrerín Return To Regular Training

Aritz Aduriz

Aritz Aduriz injured his hamstring in the first game of the season (LaLiga)

Athletic haven’t been able to avoid injuries this season, with several key players being sidelined. Iago Herrerín suffered a biceps injury over a month ago, which led to Unai Simón being thrust into the starting lineup, and Aritz Aduriz picked up a hamstring injury in that same game and hasn’t been able to play since. Now things are finally starting to take a positive turn.

After doing a bit more individual work every day, Aduriz and Herrerín were both fully reintegrated into the group on Monday and were able to participate in the entire practice session. Aduriz was with the rest of the forwards and was also involved in scrimmages, while Herrerín was able to perform every drill with the other goalkeepers. Having both back in the squad will be a major boost for the team and the hope is that they will be on the field soon.

Since going down injured Aritz Aduriz has been targeting a return against Real Madrid on Saturday. If he continues to respond well and doesn’t have any complications he will be available for the game at the San Mamés. At the same time, Herrerín is not expected to be named in the squad due to the fact that he has missed significant time and will have to work his way back into a rhythm with the rest of the group. The goalkeeper could make his return the following week is all goes according to plan.

Iñigo Martinez was also expected to make his season debut after spending the entire preseason nursing a calf injury, but that is now in doubt. The defender, who is currently on international duty, missed Spain’s Monday training session with muscle discomfort. The exact issue wasn’t revealed, but if his calf injury is causing problems again Athletic will almost certainly keep him out of action this weekend. If he is unable to play Peru Nolaskoain could keep his place in the lineup in what will be the biggest test of his young career.
