Bilbao Athletic defeated Amorebieta 3-1 on Saturday to continue their unbeaten run to start the league campaign. While the Cachorros were absolutely terrifying in attack, their defense struggled at times and gave the ball away far too often. After the game, manager Gaizka Garitano said his team deserved the win but that he was not happy at all with the performance overall.

“The result doesn’t show too much. We deserved the win because we were able to score more goals, but I’m not happy at all. We did not have security in defense, turned the ball over a lot, and the team was disorganized. In attack we were able to create chances, but I’m not happy with the game overall. It was the worst of the three we have played in the league so far.”

Garitano went on to explain that his goal isn’t just to score goals and win games. He is looking to prepare players for the first team and highlighted the need for continued growth from Asier Villalibre and Iñigo Vicente. The manager also praised Unai Vencedor who has been one of the key players in the squad this season and lamented the loss of Oihan Sancet who suffered a torn ACL last weekend.

“I’m not just looking to score goals and win games, I demand much more from the players. I’m happy with Unai Vencedor, who is still young and he works very well. He’s always attentive and plays with discipline. When it comes to Villalibre and Vicente we must realize that we are here to improve things for the first team, not just so that we can win games. The requirement is to get the players ready for the Primera and they have a lot of work left. Sancet is a tremendous loss for us. He is a great player with incredible potential. Hopefully he will recover as soon as possible.”

Bilbao Athletic currently sit at the top of the table, tied with Izarra on seven points. The Cachorros will be traveling next weekend to face off with Leioa who have only scored one goal so far this season and have earned two draws. Garitano is seriously about preparing his players for the jump to the first team and is once again aiming for a place in the promotional playoffs.
