Athletic Club hosted Amorebieta on Saturday at Lezama as they were looking to continue their unbeaten run to start the season. Before the game began, the players wore shirts in tribute of Oihan Sancet who suffered a torn ACL last weekend and it was clear that they were playing for their teammate. From the opening whistle the Cachorros were deadly in attack and it wouldn’t take long for them to strike.

After just 15 minutes of play Bilbao Athletic would open up the scoring. Wonderful buildup from the back saw Jon Rojo play Iñigo Vicente through the defense. He beat one play as he cut inside and ripped a shot at the far post. The Amorebieta goalkeeper was able to make the save, but the rebound fell to Asier Villalibre who immediately finished off the chance to make it 1-0 early on.

Minutes later Gaizka Larrazabal was taken down in the box and thought he would be awarded a penalty kick. The referee waved play on to the shock of the midfielder and Amorebieta began to attack with more force. Former Bilbao Athletic forward Oli flew down the left wing and sent in a low cross to Gorka Iturraspe who was only a few feet from goal. The midfielder attempted a shot, but saw the ball go straight to Unai Etxebarria who was in goal for the Cachorros.

Iñigo Vicente continued to terrorize the visitors with attacks through the middle and out wide. His dribbling and creativity caused problems throughout the entire game and he nearly provided an assist for Iñigo Muñoz who was unable to finish in front of goal, but he would make up for it in the 30th minute. Larrazabal beat his defender on the right wing and sent in a low cross to Muñoz who settled and then beat the keeper to double the lead for Bilbao Athletic.

The onslaught continued with Larrazbal nearly scoring a close range header and Vicente playing through Villalibre who saw the keeper making a tremendous save. Gaizka Garitano’s side kept their 2-0 lead going into the second half, but there was some cause for concern. The defense had given away possession too many times and looked shaky on several attacks.

In the 50th minute Bilbao Athletic’s tremendous attack would prevail once again. Muñoz was spread out wide on the left wing and sent in a cross that found Villalibre at the near post. The striker rose up and beautifully headed the ball down and into the back of the net to make it 3-0 and effectively finish off Amorebieta who had been unable to capitalize on their own chances. The brace brought Villalibre’s tally to three goals in three games to start the season and his confidence is growing quickly.

The visitors then began to send more players forward in attack and forced Etxebarria to make a handful of saves. In the end Amorebieta would be able to pull one goal back before the final whistle when former Athletic defender Jon Aurtenetxe was able to finish off a corner kick in the 84th to make it 3-1. The match soon came to an end with Bilbao Athletic having won their second consecutive match at home to remain at the top of the table with seven points.
