Oihan Sancet Undergoes Successful Knee Surgery To Repair Torn ACL and Meniscus
When Oihan Sancet was forced to leave last weekend’s match against Gimnástica with a knee injury there was immediate concern that the midfielder had suffered something serious. The 18-year-old underwent further testing which confirmed that he had torn his ACL and the meniscus in his left knee, effectively ending his season. It was unfortunate news for the Lezama product who was expected to get minutes with the first team this season, but now the focus is on his recovery.
Athletic announced on Friday that Sancet had undergone successful arthroscopic surgery to repair his ACL and meniscus and would be staying in the hospital for 48 hours. If there are no complications he will be released and able to go home to begin the recovery process. As is usually the case, the midfielder will miss between 6-9 months. Although there is a chance that he could return before the season ends, the most likely scenario is that his year is now over.
Sancet has already shown the potential to become a very good player for Athletic and manager Eduardo Berizzo had the midfielder in his plans for this season. Missing an entire year is never good for a player’s development, but the hope is that Sancet will make a full recovery and be back on the field to compete for his place in the first team. That being said, the most important thing is the player’s health and at 18 years old that should be Sancet’s ultimate focus.
