Unai López is ready to play a major role at Athletic Club (MD)

Unai López has come a long way since making his first team debut as a teenager. After loan spells with Leganés and Rayo Vallecano he’s now earned his place at Athletic Club and is ready to play an important role in Eduardo Berizzo’s squad. In a recent interview with Euskal Telebista the midfielder said that the time away helped him to grow and admitted that he was really excited to play again at Vallecas before the match was suspended.

“I made my debut when I was 18 years old and I had to leave on loan for two years. The truth is that it went very well and I was able to grow a lot as a player and, above all else, as a person. I was very excited to play in Vallecas. I hope the stadium issues will be resolved as soon as possible. I wish Rayo the best and that they will win many matches and stay in the first division for years.”

López was called upon to start the first game of the season, but failed to see the field the following week. Still, he figures to be an important part of Berizzo’s team and is looking forward to playing as many minutes as possible. The season is just getting starting and the 22-year-old is excited to continue earning his place.

“The season is very long. There are a lot of games left and my intention is to play as much as possible and continue learning. We won’t put limits on ourselves, but you also have to keep your feet on the ground. Our goal is to return to Europe but we are going to face it match by match, weekend by weekend. This is a great team with very good players. We can accomplish a lot.”

After seeing the match against Rayo postponed, Athletic will have a total of 19 days before their next match which will see them host Real Madrid at the San Mamés. That amount of time will see the returns of players who have dealt with injuries, like Iñigo Martinez and Aritz Aduriz, which means that Berizzo will be able to field a very strong squad. It certainly won’t be an easy fixture, but Unai López has the chance to convince the manager once again.
