Athletic Femenino Beat Real Sociedad 5-1 To Win Seventh Basque Cup Final
With one week until the start of the league season, Athletic Club Femenino faced off with Real Sociedad in the eight installment of the Basque Cup Final. The Leonas had won six of the previous seven titles and came into the game hoping to lift yet another trophy. Manager Joseba Agirre started a very strong team and it paid off in a big way from the start of the game.
Leia Zarate opened up the scoring after just 10 minutes when Real Sociedad tried to play a short goal kick that resulted in a turnover. The winger was able to take possession and blast a shot from just outside the box which the keeper was unable to completely parry away. Athletic then created four more chances in rapid succession before doubling their lead in the 36th minute when Nekane Diez finished off a wonderful counter attack with only the keeper to beat.
Athletic continued to be in complete control and made it 3-0 just two minutes into the second half when Marta Unzué headed home a corner kick. Real Sociedad then pulled one back in the 52nd minute when a free kick beat Ainhoa Tirapu, but it was too late to mount a comeback.
Just seven minutes later Athletic were on a dangerous counter attack which allowed Ainhoa Moraza to chip the goalkeeper from distance to make it 4-1. She would add a second in the 77th minute when Real Sociedad’s keeper came all the way out of the box to clear the ball which fell to Moraza. The defender calmly sent a shot right back at goal from just inside midfield which gave Athletic a 5-1 lead and sealed the victory.
Saturday’s 5-1 win over Real Sociedad saw Athletic Femenino win their seventh Basque Cup Final and showcase their very talented team. The Ladies will now be turning their attention to the start of the league season which will see them host Barcelona next Sunday at noon. Athletic are one of the favorites to win the league this year and will be looking to get the campaign started with a big win at Lezama.
