Sabin Merino Joins Leganés On Loan For The 2018/2019 Season
Since returning from summer vacation Sabin Merino has had a lot to think about. The striker came into the preseason well aware of the fact that he wasn’t expected to enjoy regular minutes under new manager Eduardo Berizzo, but was determined to fight for his place at the club. He continued to reject offers to leave Athletic but has finally accepted a move in the final hours before the transfer window closes.
Late Friday evening Athletic officially announced that Sabin Merino has been sent on loan to Leganés where he will spend the 2018/2019 season. The Madrid-based club had been heavily pursuing the 26-year-old all summer and have long admired the Lezama product. Merino is expected to compete for a place in the starting lineup where he will be able to enjoy regular minutes in La Liga.
Merino had been hesitant to leave Athletic due to his love for the club and desire to continue playing at the San Mamés. With his contract set to expire next summer the move to Leganés will be prove to be a vital time in his career. If he returns to the level he showed when he was first promoted he could earn an extension, but at the moment his future with Athletic is in doubt.
The club also stated in their press release that they retain the right to recall Merino and extend his contract. The 26-year-old’s ultimate goal is to continue as an Athletic player and that should give him the motivation to make the most of this loan move and, hopefully, rediscover his best football once again.
