Iñigo Martinez has been called up to the Spain National Team (LaLiga)

The La Liga season may have just started but it is already time for the first international break. After this weekend’s matches take place there will be a pause in the league and some players will be leaving to join their respective National Teams and youth teams. For a club like Athletic this time often allows for the squad to get rest and work on improvements, but there are three that will be away from the group.

On Friday new Spain coach Luis Enrique announced his first squad list which saw the addition of Athletic center-back Iñigo Martinez. The 27-year-old has already featured in a small handful of games for the Selection dating back to his debut in 2013 against Ecuador. With Gerard Pique having retired from international football Martinez may now have the chance to become a regular part of the team.

Meanwhile, former Athletic player and current Spain U21 coach Luis de la Fuente also announced his squad list which included two Lions. Unai Nuñez and Unai Simón will both spend time with the youth team during the international break and are expected to play major roles in the team. Nuñez has already become a regular face for the side and Simón is looking to build on what he has already learned while starting for Athletic.

While the international break is underway Eduardo Berizzo will be preparing his team for the 15 September meeting with Real Madrid at the San Mamés. It certainly won’t be an easy game for the Lions, but the returns of Iñigo Martinez and Aritz Aduriz will give the team an added boost while playing in front of their own fans.
