Eduardo Berizzo Vetoes Mikel Rico’s Move To Huesca
Over the past 24 hours reports have really picked up linking Mikel Rico with a return to Huesca. Sources close to the newly promoted club believed that it was only a matter of time before the deal became official with Athletic Club choosing not to stand in the way of the 33-year-old. The Lions chose to leave the decision up to the player and manager Eduardo Berizzo who has had the finally say.
According to a breaking report from Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo, Eduardo Berizzo has rejected the transfer as he still counts on Mikel Rico playing a role in the team this season. The midfielder was expected to have his contract with Athletic terminated in order to join Huesca on a free deal, but will now stay at the San Mamés under the orders of the new manager.
Berizzo’s decision to veto the move is certainly interesting. Rico hasn’t been expected to have many minutes this season but the manager obviously has other plans if he refused to let the midfielder leave the club. Rico was called up for the match against Huesca on Monday, but remained on the bench which is what prompted negotiations between the two clubs. After that match Berizzo stated that he is counting on everyone in the team and had no plans to trim the squad any further. Huesca reporters claim that the club hasn’t given up on signing Rico but for now he looks set to stay at Athletic.
