Beñat And Mikel Balenziaga Have Rejected Offers To Leave Athletic In Hopes Of Convincing Berizzo
The final day of the summer transfer window has arrived and, while Athletic may not be looking to make any more signings, there is still a chance that the someone could leave the club. Several Lions have attracted interest from clubs across Spain, but everyone in the team is hoping to earn their place under new manager Eduardo Berizzo.
According to a report from Pako Ruiz of DEIA, Beñat has received offers from Alavés and Girona as the transfer window has drawn to a close. Both clubs would give the 31-year-old the chance to be a starting midfielder, but he has no interest in leaving Athletic and has rejected the proposals. Beñat is determined to convince Berizzo and wants to fight for his spot in the lineup after being left out of the squad for the first two games of the season.
Meanwhile, Mikel Balenziaga continues to be the target of transfer rumors with Real Valladolid refusing to give up on landing the left-back. Javier Beltran of AS has reported that the newly promoted club has made a late push to sign the 30-year-old who has also rejected to the offer and is committed to Athletic. Although he is aware that he is behind Yuri Berchiche in the pecking order Balenziaga believes that he will enjoy regular minutes this season.
Sabin Merino has also received interest from Leganés and a multitude of clubs from the second division but has rejected them all in hopes of battling for minutes behind Aritz Aduriz. After Monday’s game against Huesca Eduardo Berizzo made it clear that he is not planning to trim the squad any more and that if anyone leaves it will be because the player has asked for the move. At this point there may be a handful of players attracting attention, but they are all focused on earning their place at the San Mamés.
