Iñigo Lekue Undergoes Surgery To Repair Fractured Ankle
The injury bug has hit Athletic Club hard to start the season. After seeing the likes of Iñigo Martinez and Iago Herrerín sustain severe injuries during the summer, Iñigo Lekue’s name was added to the list last week. During Thursday’s training session the right-back suffered a fractured ankle and will now begin the recovery process.
On Monday Athletic officially announced that Lekue will be undergoing surgery later in the afternoon to repair the fractured ankle through osteosynthesis, which means that metal will be used in the procedure. Normally, recovery for a fractured ankle can take around six weeks but the need for surgery will likely see the 25-year-old miss even more time.
Before suffering his injury Lekue had been linked with a loan move to Real Betis, but that has, of course, been ruled out now. Eduardo Berizzo was asked about the situation in a recent interview and said that he had no plans of letting Lekue leave, stating that the right-back will get his chances when he returns from injury. With Oscar De Marcos and Ander Capa already in front of Lekue in the pecking order Athletic will have no issues at the position, but the loss will affect the team’s depth and versatility.
