The La Liga season has finally begun, but not all is well in Bilbao. A week of negative headlines began when the club decided that Alex Remiro would not be allowed to play in matches until he agreed to sign a contract renewal. Fans have had many different opinions on the issue but it is clear that it is not a good situation. The players were then given Wednesday off which led to two more potentially problematic pieces of news.

First, a video surfaced that showed Aritz Aduriz celebrating with fans. The striker was seen jumping up and down and singing the Athletic Hymn with the crowd. Fans were quick to praise the striker, but others were not happy to see him doing such things while nursing a hamstring injury that will see him miss roughly one month of action. In general the situation died out rather quickly.

On Thursday another video surfaced that showed Iñaki Williams and his girlfriend having an argument in the streets. The forward allegedly spat at her after being punched, while Yeray tried to play peacemaker. In truth it is extremely difficult to tell what exactly is happening in the video. On Friday Iñaki issued an apology on social media calling the images “lamentable” and announcing that his legal team will be working to have the video removed.

President Josu Urrutia visited the team at the Lezama facilities on Friday with General Manager Jon Berasategi and Sporting Director José María Amorrortu where they met with the players before training to discuss the incidents. There is no word on what all was said during the meeting and, in truth, that is not important to know.

Players are entitled to their own personal lives and the important thing is that they come to training every day to work hard and give their best on the pitch every match. The club was understandably unhappy with the videos that surfaced and will handle any issues behind closed doors as it should be. For now the team is solely focused on preparing for Monday’s La Liga match against Huesca.
