Real Betis Interested In Signing Athletic Club’s Iñigo Lekue On Loan
The summer transfer window is still open for a few more days and that means that anything can happen. Eduardo Berizzo’s Athletic squad has plenty of depth and competition at every position which could lead to someone leaving in order to play regular minutes elsewhere. Although the manager has said that he is happy with the players he has, there is a chance that Iñigo Lekue could still see the exit door.
According to several sources in Bilbao, Real Betis have shown interest in signing Iñigo Lekue. The Béticos are competing in the Europa League this season and are in need of strengthening the right-back position. Manager Quique Setien said to like Lekue’s versatility and the club could look to bring in the 25-year-old on loan. With Lekue having renewed his contract through 2023, which also contains a €40 million release clause, an outright sale is out of the question.
Eduardo Berizzo will have the final say on the matter. He’s highlighted his desire to have versatility in the team and could simply turn down the request in favor of keeping Lekue in the team. He was left out of the squad for Athletic’s opening match against Leganés and will find it difficult to play regularly this season with Oscar De Marcos and Ander Capa standing in his way. However, joining Betis for the season would give Lekue the opportunity to play more minutes and fight for his place at Athletic when he returns next summer. If Betis are serious about their pursuit of Lekue the decision will be in Berizzo’s hands.
