Iñigo Lekue Suffers Fractured Ankle During Training Session
It has been a rollercoaster of a day for Athletic Club right-back Iñigo Lekue. Earlier on Thursday news broke that Real Betis were looking to sign the 25-year-old on loan for the upcoming season. Quique Setien was said to value the player’s versatility and the team needed help at the position as they will be competing in the Europa League this year. Although no decision was made by Athletic, any possible deal was ruled out after Lekue was injured during training.
Athletic trained behind closed doors on Thursday but several hours after the session ended the club publicly announced that Iñigo Lekue had suffered a fractured ankle. What caused the break is unknown at this time but he has already had the ankle immobilized and is undergoing further tests to determine whether or not surgery will be required.
In general, it normally takes about six weeks for a fractured ankle to heal. During that time Lekue will not be able to run and will likely be using crutches. After the ankle has healed he will be able to rejoin his teammates as he tries to get back into football shape. Until a decision is made on the need for surgery there is no way to determine just how much time the Lezama product will miss, but an absence of at least two months is expected.
Even with the interest from Real Betis sources say that Lekue was determined to prove himself to manager Eduardo Berizzo and fight for his place at Athletic. Oscar De Marcos and Ander Capa were already ahead of him in the pecking order at right-back and now he will have to work even harder to return from injury and earn playing time. Regardless, the most important thing right now is for Lekue to focus on making a full recovery.
