Iker Muniain In Advanced Stages Of Contract Renewal Negotiations With Athletic Club
It is easy to forget the Iker Muniain is still only 25 years old. The boy from Pamplona is currently enjoying his tenth season with the first team and has already made nearly 350 appearances. Over the last two years he’s dealt with major knee injuries, but has been playing the best football of his career. Now a team captain it is time for him to pen a new deal with Athletic Club.
Muniain’s contract is set to expire next summer and many fans have been worried about the fact that there has not been more urgency in getting a deal done. Although the concern is understood there has never been any doubt about the two sides reaching an agreement. Muniain is solely dedicated to the club and the two sides believe negotiations will be so simple that they have been waiting to hold talks while Athletic focused on other matters over the summer.
According to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, Muniain and Athletic have already begun negotiations and talks are at an advanced stage. Now that the season has started President Josu Urrutia is looking to finalize a deal as soon as possible and it may not be long before the renewal is announced. Muniain is said to have already told his teammates that he is close to putting pen to paper.
When Iker Muniain signed his last extension his wages were raised to roughly €4.5 million which made him one of the highest paid players in the team. That number has since been eclipsed but the new deal will see the 25-year-old back among the top earners at the club. Muniain is a talisman at Athletic. He’s a fan favorite and the Lezama product’s loyalty goes without question. At this point it’s only a matter of time before he signs a new contract with his boyhood club.
