As the San Mamés celebrated Iker Muniain’s stoppage time winner on Monday night it was easy to forget the drama that had surrounded the team just hours earlier. When the club announced the squad list for the season opener Alex Remiro was not among the names and it was quickly revealed that the decision had to do with the fact that he has yet to agree to a contract renewal.

With his contract expiring next summer the club has been working hard on a new deal but the 23-year-old has continued to reject proposals with other clubs making offers of their own. He wants to be one of the highest paid players in the team, but Athletic would rather his wages reflect the fact that he hasn’t played in the Primera and rise as he accumulates a certain number of matches. With the two sides at a stalemate a difficult decision was made.

After the game manager Eduardo Berizzo was asked about the situation and did not pull his punches. He said that until the contract situation is resolved Alex Remiro will not be participating in matches. The Argentine wants to see the 23-year-old sit down with the club and work through issues which he believes is the best thing for the team.

“It was a technical decision that has to do with the club. As long as the situation is not resolved with serenity and harmony we decided that he will not be in the squad. The situation may change and in this case I thought it best to go with another goalkeeper. Maybe if the situation was different Remiro would have started, but I don’t guarantee a starting role to anyone. He needs to decide what he wants to do. Sit down with the club and talk. I am always thinking of what is best for the club and team, not an individual player. The club comes first, then the team, then the player. He needs to figure out a solution to his situation. The club has learned from the past and doesn’t want a repeat.”

After going through a contract soap opera with Kepa Arrizabalaga last year the club is not interested in letting that happen again. They have made it clear to Remiro that they want him to be an important part of the team now and in the future, but he must also work to find common ground in negotiations. The time has come for Alex Remiro to make some difficult decisions about his future at Athletic Club and his career.
