Athletic have not been immune to the injury bug this summer and will start the season without two major players in Iñigo Martinez and Iago Herrerín. Martinez suffered a calf strain at the beginning of the preseason which forced him to miss every friendly and Herrerin sustained a biceps injury that has initially ruled him out for at least a few weeks. Being without both is a tough situation, but there is good news.

On Saturday Athletic announced updates on both players and things were certainly positive. Martinez, who has been involved in some drills over the last few days, has finally returned to normal training. His calf is said to be fully healed and he is expected to get the medical green light in the coming days. The defender is not expected to feature in Monday’s La Liga opener against Leganés, but he could be ready to play next week against Huesca.

Manager Eduardo Berizzo recently revealed that Herrerín would be meeting with a specialist due to his injury. It would be a few days before the club would be able to make a decision on his recovery plan but the worst has been avoided. He will not be undergoing surgery and will instead be facing conservative treatment of rest and physical therapy. His return will be dictated by how his body responds to the treatment over the next few weeks.

In the meantime, Alex Remiro will be the starting goalkeeper in Herrerín’s place. With Kepa Arrizabalaga now gone it will be up to Remiro to carry the load and the club has recalled Unai Simón from his loan with Elche to provide depth. If Martinez isn’t able to play on Monday Berizzo will have a difficult decision to make. Peru Nolaskoain has enjoyed a lot of minutes in that role this summer, but Yeray and Unai Nuñez have played at a much higher level. Regardless, Toto will still be able to field a very strong lineup as the Lions will be looking to take all three points at the San Mamés.
