Iñigo Martinez Joins His Teammates In Training, Iago Herrerín Working To Return Quickly
Iñigo Martinez’s absence has been the biggest disappointment of the preseason. The defender suffered a calf injury over a month ago which kept him from participating in a single friendly this summer. The 27-year-old is expected to play a major role in Eduardo Berizzo’s team and has been working hard to recovery quickly. Now there is finally some good news out of Lezama.
The defender has been training apart from the group with Xabier Clemente for a few weeks now but Wednesday’s training session saw him take a huge step forward in his recovery. Martinez was able to join his teammates for the opening session and a few drills throughout the day. Although he has not been fully integrated back into the squad, being able to practice with his teammates means that he is closer to a return.
Martinez has already been ruled out for Monday’s La Liga opener against Leganés, but the hope is that he will be able to return to full training sometime over the next week. Meanwhile, Athletic will also be without Iago Herrerín who recently suffered a biceps injury that could see him miss up to two months of action. The 30-year-old has been hard at work to keep himself in shape and make a quick recovery. He trained apart from the group on Wednesday with his arm in a wrap so as not to cause further injury.
With Herrerín ruled out for at least a handful of games, Athletic officially recalled Unai Simón from his loan with Elche. The 21-year-old will act as the backup to Alex Remiro over the next few weeks and is expected to return to Elche during the winter transfer window. Both Iñigo Martinez and Iago Herrerín have faced their injuries with positivity and a desire to return as soon as possible. Herrerín may still have a long road ahead of him, but Martinez is now on the final stretch of his recovery.
