Bilbao Athletic Win Preseason Tournament In Durango
Gaizka Garitano has been tasked with building on what was a very successful first season in charge of Bilbao Athletic. He led the team to the promotional playoffs and then saw several key players leave either due to age or promotion. This summer he’s seen more than a handful of players added to the squad from Lezama and is poised to make another strong run in the Segunda B.
The Cachorros have played eight preseason friendlies so far and have yet to loose, winning three times and drawing five. Although there are many new faces in the squad the team still is still playing at a high level. On Wednesday Bilbao Athletic participated in a three-team tournament hosted by Cultural Durango and were able to walk away victorious.
Bilbao Athletic faced Arenas Club in the first match of the tournament and played to a scoreless draw. Despite not finding the back of the net, Gaitano’s side were in complete control and were helped by the debut of midfielder Oihan Sancet who has been training with the first team. The Cachorros then defeated the hosts 3-0 thanks to goals from Iñigo Vicente, Iñigo Muñoz, and Asier Benito to lift the preseason trophy.
The squad looks much stronger now than it did at the beginning of the summer. Vicente, Muñoz, and Asier Villalibre have returned from training with the first team and Sancet, Peru Nolaskoain, and Gorka Guruzeta will also be available to Garitano when they aren’t needed by Eduardo Berizzo. As always, the ultimate goal is to develop and prepare young footballers for their chance at the San Mamés, but this Bilbao Athletic team will also be looking to make a run at promotion for the second straight year.
