Athletic Club Recall Unai Simón From Loan With Elche
With Iago Herrerín having suffered a severe muscle injury and Kepa Arrizabalaga now playing for Chelsea, Eduardo Berizzo is left with only Alex Remiro at the goalkeeper position. The manager called up Hodei Oleaga and Unai Etxebarria from Bilbao Athletic over the weekend for friendlies, but it has become clear that the team needs a real option behind Remiro to start the season.
On Wednesday Athletic officially announced that they have recalled Unai Simón from his loan with Elche. The 20-year-old joined the Segunda club back on 27 July and was expected to be their starting goalkeeper this season. Returning to Athletic will see him act as the backup to Alex Remiro while Iago Herrerín is recovering from his biceps injury. Simón will rejoin his Athletic teammates in training on Thursday.
Of course, returning from loan also means that Simón will not be playing regular minutes like he would at Elche, but this decision was made by Berizzo. The club entertained the idea of signing a new goalkeeper but the manager specifically requested for Simón to be brought back to the team. The Lions also reportedly had to compensate Elche for recalling the player. According to sources Simón will return to Elche during the winter transfer window.
It was already clear that Iago Herrerín was going to miss roughly 2 months with his biceps injury, but bringing back Simón doesn’t paint a positive picture for his recovery. Berizzo recently revealed that the 30-year-old is meeting with a specialist and the club still has not given any indication of what his recovery process will look like. In the meantime, Herrerín has been working out on his own and posting videos on Instagram to count down the days until he can return.
